"My first day on the job was an easy day, actually," paramedic field chief, Vicky Hernandez tells Start TV. "I remember going to bed at the end of the day, thinking, 'I can do this. I can do this forever.' That was like, the last easy day I had."

Though being a paramedic field chief in the city of Chicago isn't an easy job, Hernandez loves being a part of the action. "You have to come at things from so many different angles," she says. "Because knowledge and understanding makes you a better caregiver."

Hernandez is noticing that more and more women are taking on roles with the fire department and quickly working their ways up through the ranks. 

"We're all chiefs," she says. "It's been fantastic.
