Nancy Rotering is currently the Mayor of Highland Park, Illinois, but her career in politics actually started with a stop sign. Walking her kids to school, there was a busy road she wanted to make safer. So she gathered 200 neighbors and they marched on city hall. How did she go from parent advocate to the first woman mayor in her post? She told Start TV, "By ringing every doorbell." Watch the video above to hear more about her journey.

Before becoming mayor, Rotering served as a Council Member for Highland Park. She was also a candidate in the 2018 race for Illinois Attorney General. As she became more visible in her community, Rotering said, "I had to get used to being a role model.”
