Sometimes, life takes an unexpected turn. When Lillah McCarthy moved to Los Angeles, she had every intention of becoming an actress. It wasn't long into her life in California, however, that she learned she'd rather be on the other side of the camera.

McCarthy went on to work for TNT, having a hand in creating some of the most iconic characters — and plenty of strong, female characters while she was at it. In fact, her first success story was The Closer, which originally wasn't pitched with a female lead. At least, not until she and her colleague suggested it.
