The actress who played Lane Kim in Gilmore Girls appeared on this episode of Strong Medicine
Posted: May 29, 2025, 11:45AMIn the hearts of Gilmore Girls fans, Keiko Agena will forever be Lane Kim, Rory's loveable and supportive best friend. The actress portrayed a young girl who courageously broke free from her strict parents' expectations. Her dream of independence and exploring her passions and personal interests that aren't considered traditional by her family turned into reality because she was determined to control her own life.
Kim is Agena's most-known role, but the actress appeared in films and television shows before, during, and after her time in Stars Hollow. One of those parts is in another Start TV show, Strong Medicine. In the 2001 episode "Control Group," Agena played An-Soo "Alison" Kim.
In the episode, Dr. Jackson (Philip Casnoff) asks Dr. Stowe (Janine Turner) to try a new experimental drug on his wife, who has multiple sclerosis. Meanwhile, Lu (Dr. Luisa Delgado, played by Rosa Blasi) treats a young woman with anorexia. That young woman is Agena's character.
Alison reveals that she was on a carrot and mustard diet, to which Dr. Lu tells her she can't live on just carrots. Alison and her fiancé are getting married in eight weeks, and the young woman wants to fit into her wedding dress. After telling Lu she'd increase her calorie intake, the character is rushed back to the hospital.
She's dehydrated, and her heart rate and blood levels are low. James, her soon-to-be husband, doesn't understand what is happening. Despite barely seeing Allison eat food, he was under the impression that she was just a picky eater.
Lu says, "She's starving herself, James." After chatting with Mrs. Kim, Alison's mom, the young woman's family visits her in the hospital, where secrets are revealed, and a pact to start over is initiated.
Soon after, Alison arrives back at the hospital for a checkup, and everything seems fine until Dr. Lu notices bruises on her arm. In the end, it is revealed that Allison has been harming herself differently because she doesn't want to hurt anyone else.
