Tara Poremba got her start in the Marine Corps, which was also her first experience with a firearm. She learned a lot, though; in 1995, Poremba became the first woman in the history of the Chicago Police Department to become “Top Gun” of her graduating class. She says that the Marine Corps molded her into a strong, independent woman.

After her time in the Marines, Poremba combined the two career paths she had always wanted to follow: Being a police officer and working with animals. She now trains and handles dogs for the Chicago Police department.

"One of the main things is to be yourself," she told Start TV in the video below. "Don't try to be somebody who people expect you to be."
