There's something unique about an individual with generational talent who leaves a positive mark through their body of work. Angela Lansbury was truly one of a kind, and when the industry finally recognized and appreciated her, it was the beginning of a special movement.

After years of being overlooked, Angela Lansbury was in high demand — especially in television. The actress had a clear vision: to star in her own TV production. The opportunities were abundant, and she eventually chose to portray Jessica Fletcher on Murder, She Wrote for 12 seasons. However, this decision was challenging, as she was presented with a difficult choice before accepting the role.

According to Angela Lansbury: A Life on Stage and Screen by Rob Edelman, the actress was approached about starring in her own situational comedy while being asked to star in Murder, She Wrote.

The book reads, "Two series were proposed to Angela. In addition to Murder, She Wrote, she had been approached by Norman Lear to do a situation comedy. Her agents suggested that she accept the sitcom."

With her talents, Lansbury could've very well thrived in any genre, but there was something about MSW's character, Jessica Fletcher, that made her go against what her agents felt was the best decision.

"But I fell in love with the character of Jessica," Lansbury said. "What appealed to me about Jessica Fletcher is that I could do what I do best and have a little chance to play — a sincere, down-to-earth woman. Jessica has extreme sincerity, compassion, and extraordinary intuition. I'm not like her. My imagination runs riot. I'm not a pragmatist. Jessica is."

Lansbury ultimately made the right decision because Murder, She Wrote impacted viewers and the television industry in a way many generations will benefit from.
